| cat sniffing a lemon in disgust |
Story Mode
It's another hot and humid summer afternoon in Mithran's household. Dharshini was preparing the lemon juice and a knock on the door. Maha got the door and found her neighbor/friend Abi with her pet cat.
Maha welcomed Abi and offered the juice. The cat was set free, wandered over and sniffed the air — then bolted out of the kitchen like she'd seen a ghost. Maha burst out laughing.
Maha: Why did she run away like that?
Mithran: Cats hate the smell of lemons. Actually, most citrus — oranges, grapefruit too.
Abi: But she likes smelling everything else! Why lemons?
Nobody Actually Knows Why
Mithran: It's a real mystery - nobody's completely sure. Some think it's the chemicals in citrus peel bothering their sensitive noses. Others think it's just the sourness they can't stand.
Maha: So no one found out?
Mithran: Not for certain. It's one of those things that's well-known but not fully explained.
Wait — But She Likes the Lemon Soap!
Abi: But Uncle, she sits right next to the lemon-scented soap in the bathroom! She doesn't run from that.
Mithran (laughing): You're right. Lots of cats are fine with lemon-scented cleaning products, even though they hate real lemons. Nobody's sure why that's different either. Maybe it doesn't smell "real" enough to bother them.
Maha: The cats have weird taste.
Just then, the cat peeked her head back into the kitchen — sniffed once, and darted off again.
Maha (giggling): She's never coming back to our house again it seems!
With that, Maha, Mithran, Dharshini and Abi started tasting the lemon juice
A Recap
Cats commonly react with strong dislike to lemons and other citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit, often reacting with disgust or running away entirely. The exact reason isn't fully confirmed — it may be the natural chemical compounds in citrus irritating their sensitive noses, or simply the sour smell itself. Oddly, many cats don't show the same aversion to lemon-scented cleaning products, suggesting it's something about real citrus specifically that bothers them, not just the scent category in general.
